BILBAO, 26 Jun. - Zaldibar Argitu, Ekologistak Martxan and the Carta de Derechos Sociales de Euskal Herria have demanded "urgent" action from the Basque Government regarding the Zaldibar landfill (Bizkaia) after confirming "a rapid loss of stability of the waste mass in the area" and with the aim of avoiding "another Zaldibar".
They made these demands at a rally outside the Basque Government headquarters in Bilbao, where they informed the media that they had registered a formal request with the Department of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment to carry out these urgent actions.
They also announced two protests, one in front of the Basque Parliament on Thursday 29 June at 12.00 p.m., and another from the Zaldibar Town Hall square on Friday 30 at 7.00 p.m.
Following a banner reading "Labortegia Erortzeko Arriskuan, Jaurlaritza, Bete Zure Ardura" (In the face of the risk of the landfill collapsing, Government, fulfil your responsibility), representatives of these three groups expressed "their concern" over the latest data on the current state of the Zaldibar landfill.
They remind us that the latest geological report of the area confirms the fast loss of stability of the waste mass in the landfill. These groups have considered "vitally important to inform residents about the current risk situation", and have called for mobilisation to demand "urgent action from the Basque Government to prevent another disaster".
The lawyer Carlos Alonso highlighted that, according to the geological report commissioned to the company Geología y Geotecnia Larrea S.L. by the Basque Government, "the waste mass is not stable" and the Safety Factor (SF) in April was 1.15, with a descending tendency, so if it were to descend to the value 1, it could collapse.
